ABRSM publishes a new Woodwind syllabus for 2014-2017
ABRSM, the exam board of the Royal Schools of Music, will launch a new Woodwind syllabus in July featuring revised repertoire for all subjects – Recorder, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, and Saxophone. The repertoire lists, selected in consultation with our panel of woodwind specialists, comprise a mix of new pieces as well as popular pieces from previous syllabuses. The repertoire lists will be available from 4 July 2013 for use in ABRSM exams from January 2014. Highlights include new albums of miniatures by Philip Sparke for Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon and Saxophone; several classic works from the English, Italian, German and French Baroque period for recorder; the jazzy Divertimento No. 2 by the Maltese composer Charles Camilleri on Grade 8 Clarinet; and a Vivaldi flute concerto that came to light as recently as 2010, on Grade 8.

‘Woodwind teachers and students have some wonderful repertoire choices to look forward to in our new syllabuses,’ said Robert Sargant, Syllabus Manager at ABRSM. ‘Over many months our selectors have scoured the broadest range of publications in search of exciting new exam material, while ensuring that a core of deserving favourites will also appear.’ As part of the launch ABRSM will be running a Guess the composer competition on our website from 25 June to 4 July. To enter, participants are invited to listen to a short audio clip of a piece from the new syllabus and identify the composer of the work. We will be offering a daily prize as well as a chance to win one iPod nano.
